The Shellfish Pig: Olive Magazine “Best Streetfood Chef” Finalist

The Shellfish Pig: Olive Magazine “Best Streetfood Chef” Finalist

We’ve had a fantastic year so far, so when we found out that Nick had been nominated and had made the final 4 in the “Best Streetfood Chef” Category of the Olive Magazine Chef Awards we were blown away! You can read all about the awards on the Olive website by clicking here The Editor of Olive magazine, Laura has already made the trip down to Cornwall and has been to visit our van. Nick cooked up 3 tasty dishes for her in the most glamorous of locations (a car park, in the Cornish mizzle!). We have to wait a while to see who wins but to be honest,Nick is just chuffed with the final 4, against some pretty tasty competition nationwide! The ethos of the awards is lovely and it is well worth having a look through all the categories! We stole this paragraph from their website as we think it shows what olive Magazine do and are trying to achieve with their awards - fantastic stuff! “For the past 15 years olive has championed the chefs that are making a difference to the way we eat in the UK. Instead of focussing on ‘celebrity chefs’ and ‘TV cooks’, we’ve sought out the professionals behind the pass who are breaking a sweat, innovating and pioneering. And this year, for the first time, we’re celebrating them officially – with the launch of the olive magazine Chef Awards, in association with Dark Horse Wine.” We are still very much in the midst of our busiest year and we are absolutely loving it, so to get this bit of recognition is a great...
The Shellfish Pig: Plastic Free & Proud!

The Shellfish Pig: Plastic Free & Proud!

If you’ve ever spent a few minutes reading the “Our Ethos” section of our website you will know that we have always taken great care and pride in using minimal amounts of materials that aren’t compostable. All of our cutlery, napkins, boxes, trays, coffee cups and chowder pots are from either Vegware or Bio Pac Ltd and are made of plant based and biodegradeable/compostable materials. No straws of any kind have ever been in, our given out from our van.  “Single use plastic straws have to be one of the most ridiculous, self indulgent items humans have come up with. Used for a matter of minutes then discarded to landfill where they outlive us all, they are something we can all do without. We are right behind The Final Straw Cornwall ” The Shellfish Pig, January 2018 You can quote us on that!! Our biggest issue with plastics has been with bottled water. At festivals and some public events it has felt essential to be able to sell people water with their meals, if they choose to buy it. But it has never sat right with us. You can buy 24 plastic bottles of water from a well known cash and carry for less than £3. The bottles end up in bins and landfill and the fact that this is happening all over the UK is too big a problem to ignore. We recently got involved with, and ignited quite a debate live on BBC Radio 6 Music on the Cerys Matthews show via Twitter. We asked the question, how can we sell water to the public without plastic being involved? After...
The Shellfish Pig: Selfish Bloggers!

The Shellfish Pig: Selfish Bloggers!

Embarrassed, disapointed, ashamed, were none of the emotions we felt when we realised that we hadn’t managed to produce a blog post for over 6 months! 2017 has been quite the year for us and we are proud to say we have just been to busy to blog! 2017 has seen us win Best Streetfood at the Food Magazine Awards. We have served our food at no less than 11 weddings, 9 private parties and over 15 festivals and events. We have been sent lots of Giant Pass The Pigs games as freebies by The Official Pass The Pigs Company, as they loved our idea of “Pass The Shellfish Pigs”, which we encourage our customers to play by the van at festivals. We have been approached by River Cottage (stay tuned on that one!), The Oxford University Keble Ball, HMS Drake among other esteemed venues who are all keen to have The Shellfish Pig along to their events next year! Did I mention we got married and had a lovely honeymoon this year aswell!? Yet again we have been blown away by Cornish landscapes and buildings where we have been luck enough to pitch up and serve at. Mostly we have been humbled by the wonderful people who have booked us and eaten from us across the year - it’s been a busy old blast! 2017 has been simply fantastic and has energised us to look forward to 2018 and to become better bloggers (this bit may or ,may not be true, time will tell). As Winter draws in I am sure we will find time to write a...
Winter is Coming!

Winter is Coming!

After such a busy Summer which stretched out into Autumn we are happy that our great pitches and events keep on coming! A couple of weeks ago we served our food alongside our favourite pizza guys; Wild Bake, at The Bike Lights event in Wadebridge which was a sight to behold and well worth a trip next year (we will be there for sure!). We are now back at our Tremough Campus (Penryn) pitch every Tuesday from around 10.30am onwards serving up our smoked pulled pork, burritos, chillis, chowders and much more! We have had 3 sell out weeks since returning which is a great sign that we are doing something right for the hungry students and staff! On Friday 6th November we head to our favourite pub; The Star Inn, Porkellis, to serve up some sausage themed dishes as we help the guys celebrate National Sausage Week - Shellfish Pig style! Do come along if you can, it will be a tasty sausage fest! Then after that we will start to think about The Truro City of Lights, always an incredible evening and one of our favourite events of the whole year! More info will follow in our next blog! We are still available for hire and also have several outside catering/Christmas & birthday party deliveries to make! Plenty more on the horizon too but feel free to get in touch if you’d like to find out...
The Shellfish Pig – What a Brilliant Summer it was!

The Shellfish Pig – What a Brilliant Summer it was!

Phew! We admit it; we’ve been too busy to blog for a couple of months, sorry it’s been quiet! This Summer has been the best yet for The Shellfish Pig (ok so we only have one other to compare it to but still!). From our own very first Feast Night back in May; to BAAM Fest in June; Rock Oyster Festival in July; Trefusis Sounds and The Sky Bar in August and Crugfest in September, we have had our minds blown by some unbelievably good Cornish events, in some beautiful locations. We popped up on Carylon Beach which, as the photo above shows, was stunning and very busy! We are hoping to do more there next year and if you didn’t get chance to visit this Summer then get it in your diary for 2016! We were delighted to be asked to provide the food at the prize giving evening at Flushing Sailing Club during the Falmouth week finale and more recently the food for the 2nd ever Penryn pop up cinema! Love doing these community events in our hometown and surrounds! We’ve been stuck in the mud, sun burnt, towed backwards (don’t ask!) and perhaps once or twice have had to camp beside the van unexpectedly; as it’s not wise to drive after a few happy ciders at the end of shift, it’s easy to get carried away! We carried on our regular visits to Padstow Touring Park and Carnon Downs Caravan Park until quite recently and as ever both places were busy and a pleasure to visit all Summer! We have been hired out for several private parties - a christening, two birthday parties, one hen party...
