The Shellfish Pig: Just Add Beer, Cheers Sharps!

The Shellfish Pig: Just Add Beer, Cheers Sharps!

It’s been such a brilliant year for our small business and we’ve had to keep this exciting piece of news quiet for most of it! We were so proud to be invited for inclusion in the first ever cook book produced by Sharps Brewery, Just Add Beer. We have worked alongside Sharps Brewery for the past few years and are huge advocates of their genuine passion for pairing great food with great beers. This beautiful cook book is packed with over 60 recipes from some of the most talented and well respected chefs in Cornwall and the UK. To be able to contribute a couple of our dishes to it is a huge honour for us! The foreword is provided by the one and only Nathan Outlaw and as sirname and alphabetical order luck would have it we are sandwiched between the incredible trio of Paul Ainsworth, Tim Barnes and Alan Bird, on the index page that is! This book is literally packed full of recipes from our Cornish food hero’s, we can’t wait to stock up on the recommended beers and get cooking this festive period! A special thanks to Ed Hughes (Sharps’ Beer Sommelier extraordinaire!) and Rachel Williams for producing this fantastic book, and involving us in it! Thanks also to Nick White and Bryony Hughes for welcoming us into The Sharps family and pushing your beers towards our food! The book is being launched officially at Padstow Christmas festival this Thursday 6th December but it is for sale now at The Sharps Website (some wicked offers to go alongside the book here too!). Probably the most...

The Shellfish Pig: Plastic Free & Proud!

The Shellfish Pig: Plastic Free & Proud!

If you’ve ever spent a few minutes reading the “Our Ethos” section of our website you will know that we have always taken great care and pride in using minimal amounts of materials that aren’t compostable. All of our cutlery, napkins, boxes, trays, coffee cups and chowder pots are from either Vegware or Bio Pac Ltd and are made of plant based and biodegradeable/compostable materials. No straws of any kind have ever been in, our given out from our van.  “Single use plastic straws have to be one of the most ridiculous, self indulgent items humans have come up with. Used for a matter of minutes then discarded to landfill where they outlive us all, they are something we can all do without. We are right behind The Final Straw Cornwall ” The Shellfish Pig, January 2018 You can quote us on that!! Our biggest issue with plastics has been with bottled water. At festivals and some public events it has felt essential to be able to sell people water with their meals, if they choose to buy it. But it has never sat right with us. You can buy 24 plastic bottles of water from a well known cash and carry for less than £3. The bottles end up in bins and landfill and the fact that this is happening all over the UK is too big a problem to ignore. We recently got involved with, and ignited quite a debate live on BBC Radio 6 Music on the Cerys Matthews show via Twitter. We asked the question, how can we sell water to the public without plastic being involved? After...
The Shellfish Pig: Selfish Bloggers!

The Shellfish Pig: Selfish Bloggers!

Embarrassed, disapointed, ashamed, were none of the emotions we felt when we realised that we hadn’t managed to produce a blog post for over 6 months! 2017 has been quite the year for us and we are proud to say we have just been to busy to blog! 2017 has seen us win Best Streetfood at the Food Magazine Awards. We have served our food at no less than 11 weddings, 9 private parties and over 15 festivals and events. We have been sent lots of Giant Pass The Pigs games as freebies by The Official Pass The Pigs Company, as they loved our idea of “Pass The Shellfish Pigs”, which we encourage our customers to play by the van at festivals. We have been approached by River Cottage (stay tuned on that one!), The Oxford University Keble Ball, HMS Drake among other esteemed venues who are all keen to have The Shellfish Pig along to their events next year! Did I mention we got married and had a lovely honeymoon this year aswell!? Yet again we have been blown away by Cornish landscapes and buildings where we have been luck enough to pitch up and serve at. Mostly we have been humbled by the wonderful people who have booked us and eaten from us across the year - it’s been a busy old blast! 2017 has been simply fantastic and has energised us to look forward to 2018 and to become better bloggers (this bit may or ,may not be true, time will tell). As Winter draws in I am sure we will find time to write a...
The Shellfish Pig: Street Eats, Beats & Beer at The Rebel Brewery

The Shellfish Pig: Street Eats, Beats & Beer at The Rebel Brewery

Over the past few years we have been lucky enough to visit some amazing streetfood markets like Markt Halle Neun in Berlin, Street Feast in London, Digbeth Dining Club in Birmingham and Van Van Market in Barcelona. These inspiring streetfood gatherings all have a couple of things in common: They are held regularly; daily, weekly, monthly. The locations sometimes change, the traders often change but the event itself happens regularly and people in the city begin to factor it into their day/night, or even make a visit their night out. The model of each streetfood market is pretty simple. Great vendors that showcase local produce as much as possible, serve lovely food and give good service, lots of seating, good music, great beer and a quirky/under utilised venue! The rest is down to the people that visit the market, they help to create the ambiance and a vibrant atmosphere. These places are not festivals but they are great places to go and enjoy time with friends and family, eat great food, try some local beers, maybe even meet some new friends! Another plus from a streetfood traders point of view on these sort of markets is that they are usually set up and managed by streetfood traders. With pitch fees at festivals becoming unsustainable for traders who want to serve the best quality food, these streetfood markets are set up to offer fair pitch fees to traders. With all that in mind we are delighted to announce “Street Eats, Beats & Beer, Volume 1” at The Rebel Brewery on Saturday 8th April, 11am - 6pm. We really hope you can come along...
